The algorithm I use is quite fast, but keep in mind that FaberZooms does not run as fast as it could. The Mac host might have useful calculations to do, so I gently "relinquish the processor". Version 1.1.1 is updated for use with DarkSide 4.1, and emits a sound while the rectangle moves.

Version 2.1 contains user interface upgrades and bug fixes to Enigma 2.0. Requires System 7. Also included is a program that overwrites and delete files.

It sports background formatting, but only when the new Thread Manager is present. You should notice that Disk Charmer allows switching among applications while operating. This happens because I use "asynchronous" reads and writes from/to the disks. Macs with I/O chips (IIfx, Quadra 800, 900, 950, and probably the Workgroup Servers) do not slow down while reading the entire disk. This version of Disk Charmer was written because the author wanted a drag & drop eraser with every possible option and a nice, easy to use interface. Requires System 7. System 6 users can use version 1.4.6, in the Utilities section. 2.1.1 contains bug fixes.

This file helps your computer keep track of what files are on your disk. The problem is that this file never gets cleaned up, When you remove files from your disk their entry is not removed from the desktop file. So after much usage this file get unnessarily large, I've seen them as large as 100K. DesktopFile Killer (DtF Killer for short) removes this file. A new, smaller, one is then created. To activate DtF Killer drag a disk icon to Dtf Killer's icon. DtF Killer will then atempt to delete the desktop file for that disk.

Make aliases of it on your desktop and rename them according to the desired option. Keep a number of Valets around in convenient places. With them, you can move, delete, and alias files quickly and easily. Just double click on a Valet to choose your options. The drag and drop interface is pretty self explanatory. Desktop Valet does not work on floppy disks. Desktop Valet now recognizes Apple Events! Requires System 7.

It makes the necessary one hour time changes from year to year for you without you having to worry about it. It also gives the dates that the hour changes on. Daylight! also give the history of Daylight Savings Time. This version adds support for the Daylight Saving Time bit in the parameter RAM. This is a great fix because now it doesn't matter if you boot from different drives - the computer's PRAM knows if you're in DST or not. Works fine with a Plus, which surprised me. Requires System 7. Of course most of Arizona does not need this control panel, but you can use it to learn the dates that the rest of the country changes on.

Now there is a Control Panel that lets you do the same stuff with System 7 windows. Color7 lets you change the colors of windows, buttons, menus, and text highlighting under System 7. Great when it comes to changing the colors of those beveled edges and highlighted zoom box. There is a revert button, if what you create just doesn't look right. This updated version of Color7 fixes a bug in the button drawing, so that it doesn't constantly redraw while under 24-bit mode. It also keeps the colors from changing incorrectly after choosing a color.

The "PowerBook" or "Portable" Control Panel provided by Apple only allows you to enter a single wakeup time. This prevents you from scheduling multiple wake-up sessions. For example, if you wanted to send your faxes at 1:00am, and then download some files at 2:00am, you'd have to stay up until 1:00am, and reset the wakeup timer manually. Insomniac is a very convenient program for automatically sending faxes or email in the middle of the night. Insomniac allows you to program up to fifty wakeup events (only two until you register it for $10).

If the open/save dialog should happen to obscure the Finder window you are looking for, then simply drag it out of the way by dragging it from any point along the frame! Requires System 7. You will be also asked for the name of the application which can open the resulting file; I have added this because the Finder 7.x can read this name and show it to the user if the application is not present. ChunkJoiner operates on data forks, because by joining resource forks you would obtain a corrupted resource file. ChunkJoiner can only be used under System 7 or later.

The known versions of the Finder (7.0, 7.0.1, 7.1) do not delete this file when removing a custom folder icon. They only delete the icon resources from the file. Note that no other information is kept into these “Icon” files. Folder Icon Cleaner correctly removes the icon by deleting the file (and by updating the “Use custom icon” attribute of the folder). No data is lost, you only gain a little more free space on your disk.

The reason this extension is necessary is that, starting with System 7 TuneUp, AppleTalk does not load into memory if it is off at startup time. To install it, just drop it into your Control Panel folder and restart. Felix is very small (about 12 kilobytes on disk and less than 512 bytes of RAM) so its size shouldn't bother you too much.

Its a piece of software that lets you use some extra RAM memory as a really fast hard disk. The only difference between a ramdisk and a normal disk is that when you turn the power off to your Mac, or restart, the contents of the ramdisk are lost. This is one reason AppDisk has several options to automatically save a copy of the ramdisk contents onto your hard disk. The difference between AppDisk and most other ramdisk programs is that the AppDisk gets the memory for its disk from its application memory. Requires System 7.

Enclosed is edition 1.0.2 of Airport QuickStart. It now loads a lot sooner (maybe a few seconds so) and no longer exhibits the incompatibility with Now Startup. It is no longer a cdev but is an extension instead, which is fine because the cdev never worked anyway (there's nothing to configure in this extension...you simply hold down the 'Q' key at startup to make it work).

Turning it back on requires a menu item, a button click, an OK dialog and a close box. This is almost more trouble than it is worth. So, I wanted an FKEY that allowed me to blast AppleTalk off with a single key combo and hit the road. This is the ToggleAT FKEY. It comes as resource ID 12, which is only useful if you use a macro program like QuicKeys to trigger it. If you want to use it without such, you will need to renumber it.

Instead, the Mac uses a file on disk to store portions of the RAM it currently doesn't need in order to make room for another portion it needs to use now. This way of extending memory is called virtual memory (VM), and it happens transparently for the applications, except for one thing: speed. The so-called swapping of portions of RAM from and to the disk causes your computer to slow down considerably. The larger you set the virtual memory size, the slower your Mac will get.

If there are no other applications running, the Finder will simply restart again, so be sure another process is in the background. Quitting the Finder will give you about 300K of memory, but you will lose the configurable part of the apple menu, so be sure you have launched all the apps that you will need. I wrote Kill Finder because I needed a quick and easy way to make the Finder quit. Some programs will make use of the free memory through temporary memory options and such. FinderEdit allows the user to modify file mappings, change the font string, change alias styles, change information under the "get info" box, and add "Quit" commands to the finder. One would think that “users” would have better things to do with their time. This is why I wrote QTrash™. That and I’ve finally managed to find sufficient time to learn C on the Macintosh (I’m learning C and Macintosh programming at the same time, so it’s slow going).

When connected to the host there's a limit of 30 minutes per session. However, the traversal the script does can take longer than 30 minutes. Solution: every time the script dives into a topic, it pushes its address on a stack. Every time thru the loop a sub-script checks to see if the timer expired. If so, it logs off, then logs back on.

Follow these steps to configure the PowerBook suite. On your desktop computer's hard disk, create a new folder, call it Shared Folder, for example. Determine which folders on your desktop computer you want to travel with. For each of these folders, make an alias of the folder and place that alias in Shared Folder. As it scans it checks both the modification and creation dates for all files and folders and stops when it finds a date that Is earlier than January 24, 1984 -- the shipdate of the Macintosh. It's hard to imagine that you have any files older than that! You may want to modify the script to put a later date in here; a likely candidate is the date you got your Macintosh.

This information, normally hidden from users, includes the codes for the file type and file creator, and also various file attributes. With this utility, the information can also be seen by checking the "Show Comments" checkbox in the Views control panel (new with System 7.0) to cause the comments to appear when you view lists of files in the Finder.

This is useful if you maintain a drop folder on a file server or on your local machine (using System 7's Personal File Sharing feature). Once configure, DropWatch will look at the number of files/folder contained in the watched folder every few seconds. It runs but gives a friendly notice that it won't zap param and gives instructions on how to do it under 6.0 systems.

Alias Finder was written to provide a simple way to find the file that an alias file refers to. It performs this in the most natural way possible: it asks the System 7 Finder to show the file. To have Alias Finder find an original file, merely drop the alias file on to Alias Finder within the Finder. DTPPrinter System7DL Trilogy III:Files:System7 tools:D:DTPPrinter 1.1 5 17K 9/06/91 When Apple first introduced System 7 at the 1989 Developer's Conference, it included something called the 'New Print Architecture'. One of the really cool parts of the NPA were 'Desktop Printers'. This allowed you to have an icon on your desktop which represented a particular printer. You could then drag a document onto the particular printer icon, and it would print to that printer. Very useful when you have multiple Laserwriters, a Fax Modem, Print to Disk utility, etc. Well, the NPA disappeared, and with it 'Desktop Printers'....In order to correct this MAJOR oversight, I wrote DTPrinter which implements 'Desktop Printers' NOW under System 7.
DropSave System7DL Trilogy III:Files:System7 Tools:D:DropSave 2 5K 9/06/91 With DropSave installed, when you shift click on the title bar of a document in an application which has a “Save As” menu item, the document will zoom down to a region shaped like a document icon. You can drag this region around and drop it on a Finder window. DropSave will then make the application save the document in that window. By option-shift-clicking on the title bar, the application’s “Save As” dialog will appear so you can change the name of the document if you wish. (You can even move around directories if you really wanted to.) The document will reappear sometime during this process.
